New business, Mekko Market & Cafe, is introducing an international concept to Prospect Road making selling preloved clothing easy!
Mekko Market & Cafe is based on a second hand market business model, which originated from Paris, France (markets have been a hit since the 1990s). The concept is trending in Nordic countries and there are approximately 450 similar markets in Finland. The Mekko Market & Cafe team have been completing market research for a long time to execute this model here in Adelaide and we are so excited they chose Prospect Road!
Have you ever filled bags of clothes to take to a charity store but thought their value was too high? Is selling your old fashion label clothing online too time consuming? Rent a clothing rack at Mekko Market! Now you can make a profit from recycling!
The second hand market accepts preloved women’s, men’s, and children’s clothing in good condition. The market’s main point of difference is: a seller nominates and controls the price. If you are renting a rack, soon you will be able to track your stock with booking system software. This way you can look online and decide whether you want to bring in more stock. For more information about the process, click here.
Customers can search for new boutique outfits at an affordable price and can find virtue in shopping ethically. The community will benefit from this share economy and environmental methodology.
The contemporary cafe has a modern Australian menu with Nordic influences. Their menu aims to cater for everyone with gluten free and vegan options. There are à la carte dining options inside and outside undercover and soon there will be sandwiches included in their salad bar. The cafe uses local producers, such as Cirelli Coffee Roasting, which will extend to wineries and breweries once granted a liquor license. We also hear they are one of the only cafes in Adelaide using hemp buns for their burgers! Keeping with the environmental theme, all take-away items are packaged using Biopak products. If you’re after a instagrammable lunch at a reasonable price, you’ll have to pay a visit to Mekko Market & Cafe.
Mekko Market & Cafe is the business baby of Irene Kollanus, Marjukka Wilson, and Tom Nilsson. With Swedish and Danish backgrounds, the team are made up of a business administrator, interior designer, and chef respectively. Their different disciplines make for a winning team: unique perspectives and quirks.
Following a year of market research and location scouting, the trio found the vacancy at 89 Prospect Road (formerly known as Shankers). The heritage listed building was formerly a police station and court house. Originally their business model featured a warehouse-scale market, however due to Council development and planning zoning; this became unachievable. Instead they sought after an old restaurant building, which could be converted into a mixed use tenancy. The market is the first of its kind here in Australia, therefore Mekko Market & Cafe needed to be in close proximity to the CBD, in an up and coming region. Mekko Market & Cafe is for all, from young families to professionals and retirees.
Please make them feel welcome on Prospect Road!
