City of Prospect held its inaugural awards for Excellence in Urban Design last week, which took submissions from a number of building projects across the city. The awards were established to recognise new and outstanding development in the City and to further encourage excellence in building design which seeks to improve the liveability and investment potential of Prospect.
Five award categories were available for designers to enter:
– Excellence in Commercial Development
– Excellence in Apartment/Townhouse Development
– Best Environmentally Sustainable Development (Residential or Commercial)
– Outstanding Residential Achievement relating to Alterations and Additions (over $200,000)
– Outstanding Prospect Urban Development Award.
As part of the selection process, developments must have been approved by Council and construction must have commenced after January 2015, and project nominations could apply to multiple categories.
The judging panel of seven comprised of highly regarded industry specialists, City of Prospect staff and elected members.
Prospect Mayor David O’Loughlin, who at the Wednesday night ceremony presented awards and commendations for projects which achieved excellence in the eyes of the expert panel, said that ‘these awards are for excellence and deliberately set a high bar, something we know our community expects us to do.
‘Judging was quite stringent because projects were assessed against criteria that was not just relevant to Prospect but to the high standards expected across our state and nation – winners can be assured their designs were deemed exceptional and met or exceeded the expectations of industry professionals and passionate locals alike’ the Mayor said.
‘It was the panel’s view that these inaugural awards for design excellence should reflect the highest standards and set a benchmark for future submissions.’
‘City of Prospect staff work every day with local residents, developers and architects to strive for excellence in their planning applications. We thought it was about time we rewarded those who had taken the extra time, effort and investment to achieve excellence’ he said.
‘The search for quality and excellence never rests – already our planners are empowered by the new DPA guidelines for apartments and townhouses in our main roads to achieve even higher standards of excellence for the most prominent and exciting projects in our City’.
